The years 1971 and 1972 saw civil unrest in the country. Communism was advocated
in order to achieve equal distribution of wealth among the masses.
An opposition political rally at Plaza Miranda was bombed and anarchy prevailed 
in the streets. On September 21, 1972, Pres. Marcos declared Martial Law 
"in order to save the Republic and reform our society."
